In Progress: Welcome To My Workstation Edition

Right now I'm currently working on a three-piece ensemble inspired by the Minimalist art movement, specifically the work of Piero Manzoni.  While researching his work, many of his pieces contained variations of texture, unique use of line, and limited color palettes. These pieces in particular ended up inspiring my final design.

I love the resemblance of gathers and the way his simplistic lines divide up the canvas.  This is the main reason I decided to go with a legging that was form fitting enough to create the impression of gathers.  When I thought about the silhouette of the pant, I wanted something extremely simple; something that had minimal interest. After sewing a couple of muslins, I finally came out with this pair of leggings. A lot of the time I'll try on the garment as I'm finishing it up to get an idea of the fit, and these ended up being a lot tighter than I had anticipated! However, I think the tightness of the pant creates a nice contrast to the cape that has a lot of added fullness.

Because Manzoni experimented with such different textures throughout his work, I wanted to use a variety of textures in my ensemble.  In the end, the fabrics I chose for the project included wool, jersey knit, Italian silk, and peachskin.  This look is unlike anything I've ever designed because it utilizes contrasting fabrics to create a single look.  So far, I've really enjoyed using the Minimalist approach to design garments that have simplistic elements yet are fashion forward.
